The Three Main Steps of Emergency Dental Care

Not knowing what to expect from your care team can make an urgent situation even more nerve-wracking. Fortunately, most providers are compassionate and will be more than happy to walk you through the treatment process!

Plus, there are many resources available that can help you get a better sense of what will happen – such as this post. When it comes to emergency dental care, there are three main steps. Keep reading if you’d like to learn more about the process.

Step 1: Exam and Diagnosis

After calling your dentist and scheduling a timely appointment, you’ll show up to their office like you would for a more routine visit. Instead of sitting in the patient’s chair for a checkup and cleaning, though, you’ll be shown back for a more thorough oral exam.

Your dentist might take X-rays and will definitely visually screen your mouth for the underlying cause of your symptoms. Once they’ve determined a diagnosis, they’ll report their findings and explain your options for treatment.

Step 2: Prompt Treatment

Since dental emergencies can have a big impact on your oral health and comfort, your dentist will want to provide relief as soon as possible. Depending on your needs, that could mean receiving treatment the very same day, or returning to the office a few days after your exam. In more complex situations, your dentist may also refer you to a local specialist.

Step 3: Aftercare and Follow-Up

Most oral urgencies require you to rest and take gentle care of your mouth after treatment. It’s important to follow any aftercare instructions your dentist gives you, or else you could develop costly complications! You should also attend any follow-up visits recommended by your care team. Some treatments have to be completed over multiple appointments, and your dentist will likely want to make sure you’re healing smoothly.

If you experience a toothache, break or chip a pearly white, discover bleeding gums, or encounter other concerning abnormalities with your oral health, don’t panic. Your dental team will take swift steps to help you get back to life as usual!
