Mistletoe is a lovely green plant with red berries, and, not unlike the bacteria that cause plaque and tooth decay, it is actually parasitic in its natural environment. Tradition holds that people who find themselves under a sprig of mistletoe together are supposed to kiss, but bad breath can turn a quick smooch into a harrowing ordeal. Here’s a quick look at how poor oral hygiene can foul your breath and how you can keep your mouth healthy and clean.
What Causes Bad Breath?
Sometimes, bad breath is a temporary problem caused by consuming too much garlic or another pungent food. However, persistent bad breath is probably the result of the foul smells produced by accumulations of plaque and decaying food debris in the mouth. While bad breath is certainly a frustrating problem on its own, the bacteria these buildups feed and shelter can also cause destructive oral infections like cavities and gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss and possibly dangerous secondary infections like sepsis.
How Can I Keep My Breath Fresh?
While it might seem easy to resolve your bad breath with sugary gum or breath mints, these products will only cover up the problem while contributing the plaque accumulations causing it. The best way to keep your breath fresh is to keep your mouth clean with proper oral hygiene, smart eating decisions, and regular dental visits. Keep the following guidelines in mind:
- Brush at least twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. It’s ideal to wait at least thirty minutes after eating or drinking anything but water before brushing.
- Floss at least once a day. However, it’s ideal to floss between meals.
- Rinse with antibacterial mouthwash daily. Look for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval on the label.
- Enjoy sweet, starchy, and alcoholic foods and beverages only in moderation.
- Be sure to drink plenty of water.
- Chew sugar-free gum for twenty minutes after eating.
- Visit our dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings.
- Abstain from tobacco use.
Don’t let bad breath ruin your big moment under the mistletoe. Proper oral hygiene and guidance from your dentist will allow you to keep your mouth healthy and clean and your exhalations fresh and inoffensive.
