If you suffer from dental anxiety or phobia, you’re
not alone. In fact, it is estimated that upwards of 75 percent of American adults have some degree of fear of the dentist. The good news is that your dentist offers solutions to help make even routine check-ups and cleanings much more comfortable. It’s called sedation dentistry, and it could make your next visit go a lot smoother. Here’s a closer look at the options your dentist offers, and how to decide which one is best for you!
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation uses a colorless gas (also referred to as laughing gas) to help create a feeling of calm during dental treatment. Administered with a mix of oxygen via a tube that sits comfortably in your nostrils, nitrous oxide has a sweet, pleasant smell and no lasting side effects. To take it, you simply breathe in and experience the calming effects. You are completely awake, so you can respond to instructions, speak to your dentist, and will remember your entire appointment. In fact, you should have no lingering side effects once your appointment is over and you can return to your daily routine if you are well enough to do so following treatment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is delivered via a pill that you will pick up from your pharmacy before your dental appointment and take once you arrive for your procedure. Because this is a heavier sedative, you will need a ride to and from the dentist, as you will be unable to safely operate machinery until the next day. For that reason, please take the rest of the day off from work or school.
Oral conscious sedation creates a deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide and does not require the use of a breathing tube. It is beneficial for patients who have higher levels of anxiety, a weak gag reflex, or who are undergoing a longer procedure. While you will remain awake, you may not remember much about your treatment once the effects wear off, but for some patients this may be a good thing.
Nitrous Oxide vs. Oral Conscious Sedation: Which is Best?
While both methods of sedation work very well, oral conscious sedation may be better for longer procedures, or for patients who have higher levels of fear or anxiety. Discuss your anxiety levels with your dentist prior to your upcoming appointment so you can work together to determine a safe and effective method of sedation before you arrive.
Remember, sedation dentistry is an excellent way to help patients who suffer from dental anxiety feel calmer and more relaxed during any type of dental treatment. If you feel as though you could benefit from this treatment, or if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your dentist for more information.
