That said, you can sustain a chip, crack, or some other form of dental damage if you aren’t careful about what you eat, when you use your teeth as tools, and what you use to complete your oral hygiene regimen. With this in mind, read on to learn six things your dentist never puts in their mouth.

1. Car Keys

Have you ever found yourself putting your car keys in your mouth when your hands are full? If so, make an active effort not to do it anymore. Not only is the surface covered in germs and grime, but the keys themselves can seriously damage your teeth!

2. Hard Candies

Hard candies are a big no-no for two reasons. The first is that biting into it too soon can cause one of your teeth to break. The second is that sucking on it until it dissolves continuously exposes your teeth to sugar. That’s why it’s best to instead reach for something that’s softer in consistency and free of added sugar, like a handful of blueberries.

3. Other People’s Toothbrushes

Whether you’re out of town visiting family or at a friend’s house, you might be tempted to use someone else’s toothbrush if you forgot yours. Don’t! Remember, the bristles are covered in plaque, bacteria, food particles, and other debris that’s been in their mouth, which you don’t want exposed to yours.

4. Whole Lemons

As you know, lemons are quite acidic! If you bite into one or drink lemon water that isn’t properly diluted, then your chances of enamel erosion go through the roof. That’s why it’s so important to be mindful when it comes to what you consume, even if it seems healthy.

5. Ice Cubes

On a hot summer day, there’s nothing quite like a glass of water, soda, or juice filled to the brim with ice cubes. This is perfectly fine – just don’t chew on the ice cubes! This is one of the easiest ways to wind up with a damaged tooth that requires same-day care.

6. Cigarettes

Cigarettes can negatively impact the look, health, and function of your smile. For that reason, you should refrain from using tobacco products of any kind. If you’ve had difficulty quitting in the past, talk to your dentist or primary care physician; they may be able to help you find a plan that works!

About the Practice

Our top-rated team at Altenbach Dentistry is led by an experienced, passionate, and caring dentist, Dr. Altenbach.
